Still Life in Wet-on-Wet Watercolor

Workshop Description: Have fun composing an interesting still life using the wet-on-wet watercolor technique to create interesting textures and atmospheres. Emphasis will be place on arranging single objects into interesting and balanced compositions based on the Principles of Design and then enhanced by texturing and shading in the wet-on-wet technique. Please note: the second class builds upon the previous one.

Materials Provided by Participant: watercolors, brushes, palettes, pencils, erasers, and watercolor paper 140lb. wt., board for stretching the watercolor paper.

Winter Landscape in Pencil or Charcoal (any subject matter)

Description of Workshop: Learn the basics of drawing winter landscapes in charcoal by applying various composition principles, drawing techniques, types of landscape compositions, aerial perspective, and the use of value masses, light, ground shadows, tree forms, and cloud formations.

Materials Provided by Participants: a set of charcoal pencils including white, eraser, drawing paper 9”x 12” or larger, and a photo of scene to be drawn if desired.

Poured Watercolor Painting (any subject matter)

Workshop Description: Instead of using brushes to apply color, diluted watercolors are poured from small containers over the the surface of the paper to create beautiful blends of colors. Shapes are defined by blocking them out with maskit in various stages of the pourings and by building up the values in a layering process. The color/colors of each poured layer becomes more intense and concentrated than the one preceding it. The number of layers poured, is dependent upon the desired outcome.

Materials Provided by Participants: a pencil, eraser, 140 lb.wt. watercolor paper larger than 9”x 12”, a hard surface (such as plexiglass, wood, etc.) larger than the watercolor paper, masking or painter’s tape, tube watercolors, a large cake or lasagna pan, a blow dryer (optional), newspapers, paper towels, an old or cheap brush with which to apply the maskit, a water container, and an eyedropper (optional). Any subject can used.
(do not buy watercolors that say “hue” on the label.)

Ink Wash Drawing (any subject matter)

Workshop Description: India ink is applied in different value mixtures to create areas of highlights, mid-tones, and shadows in the individual objects. When dry, fine textures and details can be added using pen and ink or felt pens.

Materials Provided by Participant: assortment of watercolor and bristle brushes, water container, paper towels, heavy weight drawing paper or pad (80lb, – 100lb.) at least 9”x12”, pencil, eraser, and fine tipped felt pen, palette. Any subject matter can be used for inspiration.

Mixed Media (any subject matter)

Workshop Description: Have fun composing an interesting painting using a combination of dry and wet mediums which create interesting textures and atmospheres. The wet medium used will be watercolors and the dry colored pencils or pastels. Emphasis will be place on arranging objects into interesting and balanced compositions based on the Principles of Design and then enhanced by texturing and shading. Any subject matter can be used for the painting.

Materials Provided by Participant: watercolors, brushes, palettes, pencils, erasers, and watercolor paper 140lb. wt., colored pencils or pastels.

Materials Provided by Instructor: information sheets and textural materials.
