Mixed Media (any subject matter)

Workshop Description: Have fun composing an interesting painting using a combination of dry and wet mediums which create interesting textures and atmospheres. The wet medium used will be watercolors and the dry can be regular pencils, colored pencils, or pastels. Emphasis will be place on arranging objects into interesting and balanced compositions based on the Principles of Design and then enhanced by texturing and shading. Any subject matter can be used for the painting. Please note that the second class builds upon the first. These are not two separate classes.

Materials Provided by Participant: watercolors, brushes, palettes, pencils, erasers, and watercolor paper 140lb. wt., colored pencils or pastels.

Shading Basics

Workshop Description: Shading (value drawing)is the applicationof light values(highlights), mid-values (tones), and dark values (shadows) to create a realistic, 3-dimensional quality and depth in individual objects and compositions that are drawn on a flat surface. Various grades of pencils and pressures are used to create value contrasts that range from white, through the greys, to black.

This class lasts for 6 weeks and is for people who would like to learn how to shade objects to produce dimensional effects or just sharpen already learned skills. It encompasses the placement of highlights, tones, and shadows according to the direction of the light source and the contour of the object being shaded to create realistic effects; the use of various drawing pencil grades and pressures to create different values; the use of various drawing techniques to shade and create textural effects; and the mapping of the high-key, mid-key, and low key values in an object to create weak and strong value contrasts and various moods in compositions.

Materials Provided by Participant: a set of drawing pencils ranging from the H through the B grades, a drawing pad 9”x 12” or larger, and a good eraser.

Materials Provided by Instructor: information sheets and swabs for blending.

Watercolor Floral Painting

Workshop Description: The workshop focuses on the traditional method of watercolor painting, also known as glazing. The superimposed wash is the foundation for the traditional method of watercolor painting. The paint is applied in a series of flat or graded washes superimposed from light to dark to create desired effects. The lightest color wash is applied first; the medium is applied over it; and the darkest applied over the medium. The top wash will determine the final effect.

Materials Provided by the Participant: set of watercolor paints (do not buy tube colors that say tint), brushes, cold pressed 140lb. wt. watercolor paper 9”x 12” or larger, a board larger than the paper to stretch the paper, masking or painters tape, water container, paper towels, pencil,  eraser, and photos to use for subjects.

Workshop: Spring Landscape in Oil or Chalk Pastels

Workshop Description:  Pastels are soft sticks of color that are either chalk or oil based and can be easily blended with swabs, tortillons, fingers etc. and can be worked from light to dark or dark to light to create beautiful works of art. The oil pastels can be used to create realistic works that resemble oil paintings. The focus of the class will be using various drawing and blending techniques to create textures and three-dimensional form.

Materials Provided by Participant: set of pastels, a regular pencil, and an eraser. If desired, bring photos of chosen subject matter.
